UNESCO has designated it as a World Heritage Site since 1983 due to its vast number of monuments.
The history of Cusco dates back more than 3,000 years, when the city was founded by the Inca civilization. Known as the “capital of the Inca Empire”, Cusco was the political, cultural and religious center of one of the most advanced civilizations in South America. Today, visitors can explore Inca ruins, such as Sacsayhuam\u00e1n and Qorikancha, that still remain in the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cusco (Qosqo in Quechua) is a city in southeastern Peru, located on the eastern slope of the Andes, in the basin of the Huatanay River, and a tributary of the Vilcanota in the sacred valley.
