Palcoyo Mountain Trek. Is a nature tourism activity located in the Cusco region of Peru. This destination is known as an accessible alternative to Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca), as it offers similar landscapes with a less demanding hike suitable for a greater number of visitors.
Palcoyo Mountain is located in the district of Checacupe, province of Canchis, Cusco region, at an approximate altitude of 4,900 meters above sea level. The journey from the city of Cusco takes approximately 3 to 4 hours by road.

The hike to Palcoyo Mountain Trek, is an accessible and enriching nature experience that combines colorful landscapes, tranquility, and contact with nature. Its easy access makes it an excellent option for those who wish to experience the rainbow mountains of Cusco without strenuous effort.
Palcoyo is a mineral sedimentation phenomenon that took millions of years to form. Its importance lies in the fact that, unlike Vinicunca (the classic Rainbow Mountain), at Palcoyo you don’t just see one peak, but three colorful mountains and an entire mountain range of multicolored veins.

Overview

1. More for Less – Palcoyo Mountain Trek.

Unlike Vinicunca, where you hike for hours to see one specific peak, Palcoyo is a mountain range.

  • Triple Rainbow: You can see three distinct “rainbow” mountains from the same viewpoint.
  • The Stone Forest: A highlight of Palcoyo is the Bosque de Piedras, a collection of towering, jagged rock formations caused by natural erosion that look like a prehistoric skyline.
  • The Red Valley: The entire surrounding valley often glows with a deep ochre or red hue due to the high iron content in the soil.

2. The Hike: “Andean Flat”

This is the biggest selling point for Palcoyo.

  • Difficulty: Easy to Moderate.
  • Terrain: The path is mostly flat with a very gentle incline.
  • Duration: It takes only about 30 to 45 minutes to reach the main viewpoint from the parking lot.
  • Altitude: You start high (4,700m) and end at about 4,900m (16,076 ft). Because you start so high, the physical exertion is minimal, but you will still feel the thin air!

3. Comparison: Palcoyo Mountain Trek vs. Vinicunca

4. Logistics Palcoyo Mountain Trek & Tips

  • The Bridge of Checacupe: On the way to Palcoyo, most tours stop in the village of Checacupe. Here you can see three bridges spanning the same river: one Inca (original), one Colonial, and one Republican (modern). It’s a fantastic photo op.
  • Wildlife: It is very common to see large herds of alpacas and llamas grazing right next to the trail.
  • Weather: It is notoriously windy and cold. Even if it’s sunny in Cusco, bring a heavy jacket, gloves, and a hat. The wind at 4,900m bites!

Why choose Palcoyo?

Choose Palcoyo if you are traveling with children, if you aren’t a confident hiker, or if you simply prefer a “slow travel” vibe where you can take photos without 200 other people in the background.

What to Expect

  • Start early. Tours typically leave Cusco around 4:00 AM.
  • Scenic drive. ~3 hours through remote Andean villages and rolling valleys.
  • High-altitude trek. The hike starts at ~4,600m; thin air makes even easy inclines tough.
  • Incredible views. Color-striped mountain flanked by glaciers, alpacas, and vast highland landscapes.
  • Photo ops. Best light is in the morning before clouds roll in.
  • Optional horse rental. Available if altitude or fatigue becomes a factor.
