Salkantay Trek & Inca Trail 7 days – Information.

Combining the Salkantay Trek & Inca Trail into a 7-day expedition is a great option for adventure lovers and is considered a unique trekking experience in Peru. It combines the rugged, high-altitude landscape of the Salkantay with historic stone paths, like narrow streets leading to the horizon, and enchanting structures.

Since this route is part of the protected Inca Trail network, it’s necessary to book months in advance to secure a spot and enjoy this incredible experience on this iconic route to the world wonder, the Inca city of Machu Picchu.

Expedition Highlights – Salkantay Trek & Inca Trail.

  • Two Worlds: You experience the glacial “Alpine” landscapes of Mount Salkantay (6,271m) before transitioning into the lush “Cloud Forest” and ruins of the Inca Trail.
  • The “Frozen Inca” Pass: You cross the Incachiriaska Pass (5,100.m), which is higher and more remote than any point on the standard 4-day Inca Trail.
  • Exclusive Route: While thousands do the standard treks, very few do this specific combination, offering much more solitude for the first 3 days.
  • Sun Gate Arrival: Unlike the standard Salkantay trek (which arrives via the town), this combo allows you to enter Machu Picchu through the iconic Sun Gate (Inti Punku).

Essential Details (2026 Season)

  • Difficulty: Strenuous. This is significantly harder than doing either trek individually. You are hiking for 7 consecutive days at high altitudes.
  • Permits: Since Day 4–7 uses the Classic Inca Trail, you cannot do this trek without a permit. For 2026, these should be booked 6–8 months in advance.
  • Acclimatization: You must spend at least 2–3 days in Cusco (3,400.m) before starting. Day 3 of this trek reaches over 5,000.m.
  • Logistics: Most operators provide horses for the Salkantay portion (Days 1–3), but once you join the Inca Trail (Days 4–7), porters take over as pack animals are not allowed on the stone paths.
