The Humantay Lake is one of the most spectacular highlights of the 5-day Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu. Located high in the Vilcabamba mountain range, this turquoise glacial lagoon is surrounded by dramatic Andean peaks and is visited during the first day of the trek.
Humantay Lake: A Turquoise Gem of the Andes
At approximately 4,200–4,250 m (13,780–13,944 ft) above sea level, Humantay Lake lies beneath the impressive Humantay Mountain and is fed by glacial meltwater. Its striking turquoise color comes from fine mineral sediments carried by the melting ice.
For travelers beginning the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu, Humantay is more than a beautiful viewpoint—it is the first major mountain experience of the journey.
Day 1: Cusco to Humantay Lake
The adventure usually begins early in Cusco, traveling toward Mollepata and Challacancha. From Challacancha, the trek continues toward Soraypampa, located around 3,900 m. After reaching the campsite, trekkers make the ascent to Humantay Lagoon.
The climb is relatively short compared with the following days, but the altitude makes it physically demanding. From Soraypampa, the trail rises steeply toward the lagoon before returning to the first campsite.

Humantay and the Salkantay Pass
Humantay is only the beginning. On Day 2, the route continues toward the Abra Salkantay, reaching approximately 4,630 m (15,190 ft)—the highest point of the classic Salkantay Trek. From there, the trail descends through changing landscapes toward the cloud forest and eventually Machu Picchu.
Altitude and Acclimatization
Because Humantay Lagoon is above 4,000 m, proper acclimatization is important. Spending 2–3 days acclimatizing in Cusco before starting the trek can help travelers adapt to the altitude. Walking slowly, staying hydrated, and listening to your guide are particularly important on the first day.
